Lestat el Vampiro
Published in Paperback by Aims Intl Books (February, 1996)
Author: Anne Rice
Average review score:

The Vampire Lestat is a sensual, psychological thriller!
This book is simply excellent! Lestat is a vampire you soon learn to love. He is beautiful, and yet deadly. Another thing-Lestat always makes it in the end-unlike every other Vampire book. To all you other vampire lovers-this one's for you! It gets a little confusing in a few areas, but Anne Rice brings you right into the book with Lestat-like you're right there with him. You would think there would need to be a lot of physical sex for it to be good, but this has very little of it, and the sensuality level is still high. I love this book! @-->-- :)

Lifetimes
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (September, 1997)
Authors: David Rice and Michael S. Maydak
Average review score:

Curious children, nature lovers and teachers will love this!
"NO MATTER HOW SHORT, NOW MATTER HOW LONG, NO MATTER HOW BIG, HOW SMART OR HOW STRONG, ALL LIFE HAS A PLACE, A PURPOSE AND WORTH. ALL LIFE IS IMPORTANT ON OUR PLANET EARTH."

So begins-and ends-this beautiful story which beautifully speaks the lessons of many of Earth's creatures.

This is not a book you can-or will want to-read in one sitting. Each beautifully illustrated page invites the reader to explore further the plant, animal or object featured. Children will beg their parents to take them to the library to learn more about the creature pictured on each page. (I should know. My 4 ½ year old has developed a tremendous fascination with Venus Flytraps after reading this book.)

Each page begins with the life expectancy of a new creature (plant or animal) or the age of an object (sun, planet, universe.) The author then shares just enough information about each creature to pique the interest of the reader, follows it with a small reminder of what this creature's life may teach us (Examples: "Army ants show us that if everyone works together, we can do almost anything." "Saguaros teach us how important it is to save -- and to share.") Each page then concludes with a few questions for further exploration (Examples: "Tell about a time when you helped protect an animal or someone who needed help." "Where is the one small area where Venus flytraps grow in the wild?" "If everyone in your class held hands and made a circle, would the circle be big enough to go around the General Sherman tree?")

This is not just another book about the environment, (though it certainly encourages us to develop an appreciation) but a rare treasure to be referred to again and again as our children discover their world and realize their very special purpose within it.

Light Readings: A Photography Critic's Writings 1968-1978
Published in Paperback by University of New Mexico Press (September, 1998)
Authors: A. D. Coleman and Shelley Rice
Average review score:

From a review by Taylor Holliday, The Wall Street Journal
" . . . When [W. Eugene] Smith turned his activist attention to the mercury poisoning of the waters of Minamata, Japan, in the early '70s, then-New York Times photography critic A. D. Coleman wrote, 'It seeks to be, and succeeds in becoming, not a product but a process, a tool for change.' While some may take issue with aspects of Mr. Coleman's oeuvre of humanist criticism, none would deny that as this country's first and foremost photo critic he has made a singular contribution to the field, broadening both the definition and discussion of photography. " A collection of his writings from 1968-1978 called Light Readings has long been a must-read for anyone serious about photography, and has now been reissued in an expanded second edition."

Unique and historically accurate
The unique and historically accurate Lone Star Heroines trilogy by Melinda Rice brings real events in Texas history to life as it shows young readers how girls living at different eras experienced and contributed to dramatic events. In Messenger On The Battlefield (1556227884, $8.95) is set in 1835 when 11-year-old Isabelina Montoya is happy to hear that her older sister has accepted the marriage proposal of a handsome Mexican solder. But when Texas goes to war against Mexico, dividing Isabelina's family, a decision must be made as to whether they should remain true to their Mexican heritage or fight for their new Texas homeland! Fire On The Hillside (1556227892, $8.95) is set in the spring of 1847 and finds 13-year-old Katherine Haufmann arriving from Fredericksburg, Texas with her family as immigrants from Germany. As she struggles to get used to her new home, Katherine becomes intrigued by the mysterious fires that start appearing in the nearby hills. While the rest of the townsfolk focus on peace talks with the Comanche, Katherine decides to discover the cause of those mysterious fires. Secrets In The Sky (1556227876, $8.95) is set in 1943 as World War Two is raging overseas. 12-year-old Bethany Parker lives in Sweetwater, Texas, when the Women Air Force Service Pilots come to town. When one of the women dies during a training flight, Bethany is convinced the mysterious crash was the work of a Nazi spy -- and sets out to prove it! The Lone Star Heroines is an outstanding and very highly recommended series of historical novels for young readers that are each enhanced with a "Sources" bibliography for the further study and more detailed study of Texas history.

Lone Woman of Ghalas-Hat: The True Story of the Island of the Blue Dolphins

The hit of eternity!
If I were to say that this book were the hit if the month, or even the hit if the year I wouldn't be doing it justice. This book is so much more touching than Scott O'Dell's version. I cried almost all of the way through it. Can you imagine being stranded on an island for twenty years all by yourself? The only company that you have being wild dogs? If you read this book you will discover how it feels. So, if you only read one book in your whole lifetime, READ THIS ONE. It is fantastic.

Lost on Venus (Venus No 2)
Published in Paperback by Del Rey (July, 1991)
Author: Edgar Rice Burroughs

Another great story from the master.
Very entertaining storyline. Gives the reader another chance to imagine an adventure on one of our sister planets. After reading the horrible end to the Martian series, anything would be good. But this storyline is good enough to stand alone.

Mama Provi and the Pot of Rice
Published in Library Binding by Turtleback Books Distributed by Demco Media (March, 2001)
Author: Sylvia Rosa-Casanova
Average review score:

My Favorite!
This book nourishes the neighborly kindnesses of multicultural apartment tenents. Not only are Rob Roth's watercolors warm and inviting but the mention of the food made me wish I knew those people. Rosa-Casanova sprinkles Spanish words like, "en un dos por tres", which means "lickedy-split" makes me want to polish up my Spanish again. This book promotes acceptance in a subtle way and is very satisfying.

Mayfair Witches
I have truely enjoyed the witch series, and do look forward to the next book to come out in this series. Both the witch series, and the vampire series are so spell binding that you feel like you are actually there, and living life or unlife with them. You are caught up in the spells, romance, and love of they're lives as they are. I want to thank Anne Rice for each of these series, they are as masterly written from the first word, as they are to the last one, and from book to book. Again I Thank you, and do look forward to the next books to come out in either of your series. Respectfully A Devoted Fan Marianne Alderson

Medical Terminology with Human Anatomy
Published in Paperback by Appleton-Century-Crofts and Fleschner Pub. Co (September, 1985)
Author: Jane Rice
Average review score:

Great Textbook for Medical Transcriptionists!
This was the required text for my second subject in Medical Transcription. It was very good and detailed enough for the beginning transcriptionist to understand where everything is, and to familiarize yourself with more medical terminology. This one seems to assume you already have a beginning foundation in basic medical terminology and how to form medical words using word parts, combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes. I say this because the first chapter immediately launches into a LOT of these word parts with very little discussion on what they are, how to do them, etc. The book has a detailed glossary of medical words, though, and it has these little cardboard cutouts that look like miniature index cards (flash cards) that will aid you in memorizing basic word parts. The book has very long and detailed exercises at the end of each chapter that builds on what you have already learned and strengthens your medical terminology foundation. It also comes with a CD-ROM that has exercises relevant to each chapter. WHen you complete a chapter exercise, the software evaluates your performance and tells you where your mistakes are, then prints out a study plan for you where you can bone up and read about your mistakes. An over-all good book!
